Sending Borrowing Requests to OCLC

Clio can send requests into OCLC using a number of different options

Sending Requests to OCLC

Requests are sent to OCLC via the WorldShare Order tab. You can send requests to the Review, Save, Lender, or Profile services.

There are some differences between the Review and Save services. The details are best explained by OCLC staff, but the basics are: Review items always have a default constant data record applied, and maxcost will be moved to the Notes field, whereas you can ask OCLC to leave Save requests as they are (and let Clio provide addresses and maxcost information). In both cases the request will appear in the Awaiting Review category in WorldShare, where you can finish the process of producing the request.

The Lender service is used when you've created a Lender string (probably using the search tabs - WorldCat or a union catalog). The request will be produced Be sure to include the Verified field along with the other required OCLC fields.

The Profile service is an option for a more automated process. OCLC uses your custom holdings settings and profile rules that you create to build a lender string for you and produces the request if possible. For more information on this option check OCLC support on 'Direct Request Profile'.

Make the appropriate choices and click Send Request to OCLC WorldShare. (If you have trouble with the OCLC-Save requests, contact OCLC and Clio technical support to help you adjust your OCLC settings.)

For general information about the processing of New requests see here.

If you're not sure which of the services you should use, the simplest workflow is to use Review. Many libraries also add the OCLC accession number on the WorldShare order tab (if you have WorldCat as a search tab you can copy/paste from there). Adding the OCLC number at this stage makes things easier when you later the review the request in WorldShare.

If you want to try one of the other OCLC services, contact Clio support and we'll help you on the Clio end of things and help point you in the right direction for any setup you need to do on the OCLC side.

If Clio gets an error back from OCLC Clio will leave the request in the New category and turn on the Error checkbox. If Clio and OCLC are communicating OK otherwise, this usually means that some of the information on the WorldShare tab was missing or breaks OCLC's rules. Double-check things like the address, verified, need by date fields.
